Sun-Wa Technos Promotes AED Training and Usage.

AED stands for “Automated External Defibrillator,” which is a specially controlled medical device.“Defibrillation” refers to the action of stopping spasms (fibrillations) of the heart. The AED defibrillates by sending an electric shock to the heart.

There was once a time when only a limited group of people, such as doctors, were allowed to use AED, but the rules were relaxed in July 2004 to allow ordinary people to use the device as well.An AED will indicate what actions need to be performed in an emergency using audio guidance or lights, so even ordinary people can perform a lifesaving emergency procedure with an AED.

Anyone can experience sudden cardiac arrest

Cardiac arrest is not only experienced by the elderly or those with heart disease. It can also be experienced by healthy individuals.
In fact, about 40% of people who experience cardiac arrest are healthy people with no medical history.

In Japan, 82,000 people experience cardiac arrest (cardiogenic) annually, and this number is on the increase year by year.Of those 82,000 people, roughly 90% pass away. This is a very serious situation.

There are so many deaths by cardiac arrest that both the number of deaths and the mortality rate are an order of magnitude larger than deaths by traffic accident or fire.

Prompt CPR increases chance of survival

On average, 9.4 minutes elapse between the emergency call and the arrival of the ambulance.Since brain death is considered to occur three to five minutes after the heart stops, the people at the scene need to perform emergency treatment rather than just wait for the ambulance to arrive.

However, this ambulance arrival time is simply the national average in Japan, and the time to arrive may be longer in some circumstances. Moreover, if you consider the time that elapses between a victim being discovered and 119 being called, or the time between ambulance arrival and the actual beginning of treatment, it will be even longer until proper treatment is provided.

There are some key points to note in order to make use of the AED as quickly as possible. It needs to be stored at a distance within one minute (one-way) from the site of the cardiac incident. This is because brain death is said to occur three to five minutes after cardiac arrest. Since an electric shock is needed within five minutes of cardiac arrest, and there is a possibility it will take roughly two minutes from the cardiac event to call 119 and then another minute between the arrival of the AED and the shock itself, that means the AED needs to be brought to the victim within the remaining two minutes.
